Charlie and Myra are hosting a party to celebrate their wedding anniversary, but when the first guests arrive, Charlie is hiding in his room with a gunshot wound to the earlobe and Myra and the servants are nowhere to be found. In an effort to protect their friends from a possible scandal, a story is made up about the missing couple. The more people involved in the story, the more elaborate and exaggerated the story becomes. This Neil Simon parlor comedy shows just how easy it is for rumors to take on a life of their own.

Lottie Wilton and Mrs. Arnott have never met but share a mutual feeling of unhappiness in empty relationships with their husbands. The ladies become acquainted through a newspaper advertisement and together decide to take a holiday from their spouses and rent an Italian castle for the month of April. To help with expenses, they advertise for two other women to join them. Together with Mrs. Graves, an elderly widow, and Lady Caroline Bramble, a young and attractive flapper, the women begin their month-long escape. Mavis Templeton Hollister returns home from an evening out surprised to find her new husband, Edgar Hollister, still alive. He, in turn, is surprised that she claims to have attended a church meeting that he knows for a fact had been cancelled. Edgar questions Mavis about her whereabouts but his interrogation stops abruptly when she pulls out a gun and shoots him. Chaos ensues when it comes to light that the gun was shooting blanks and Edgar’s body has vanished. Gomez and Morticia are worried about their daughter Wednesday…she’s showing signs of “normal” behavior and they can’t help but wonder where they’ve gone wrong. The change in behavior is explained when they find out their little girl has done something unthinkable…she has fallen in love with a kind, smart, and handsome young man who comes from a respectable family from Ohio. When the boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, and his parents are invited to join the Addams family for dinner, Wednesday asks her family to act as ordinary as possible and Lucas warns his parents to be open-minded. As with most family gatherings, the evening includes a giant pet squid, a secret potion, and an uncle announcing he’s in love with the moon...you get the picture.
